Brazilian downwind dream with Balz and Yo
Balz Müller and Yo Wiebel embarked on an epic downwinder along the Brazilian coast in Jericoacoara, covering 130 km over a full day of wingfoiling, all for a good cause. Join us as we delve into the reasons, the individuals involved, and the details of this remarkable adventure.
Wing Foiling for the Duchenne Boys
The Run 4 Duchenne Boys is a charity run that takes place in Zurich on New Year’s Eve to raise funds and awareness for those suffering from Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Yo Wiebel, owner and operator of a Swiss foiling school, has been a long-time participant and supporter of the charity. Upset he was unable to attend this year’s annual run, he came up with a plan.
Yo Wiebel had a thought: why not organize a 4 Duchenne Boys charity downwinder? Coincidentally, Yo and Balz Mueller were both in Brazil at the same time, so Yo invited Balz to join him on an epic downwinder along the Brazilian coastline for a good cause.
What is Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD)?
Duchenne muscular dystrophy, or DMD, is a rare and serious genetic condition that mostly affects boys and rarely girls. It causes muscles to weaken and break down over time due to a missing protein called dystrophin. This muscle damage makes it difficult for children with DMD to move and perform everyday activities. Unfortunately, there is currently no cure for DMD. However, researchers are actively working to find ways to manage the symptoms and improve the quality of life for those affected. The Run 4 Duchenne Boys aims to raise funds and support for research and those affected by DMD.
130 km downwind wing foiling experience
The day started early and ended late. Brazil delivered great conditions for the downwinder, with strong winds and big swells that made the trip a challenging but unforgettable experience.
The wind was strong throughout the day, with Balz and Yo using wing sizes of 3.1 and 3.6.
In the end, Yo and Balz spent 7 hours non-stop wingfoiling on the ocean, covering a distance of 71 nautical miles, which is just over 130 km.
