ENSIS in Maui

If you’re into windsports, you’ve seen the iconic posters from Maui. It’s a legendary destination in the wind and watersports scene, and what happens in Maui often sets the stage for the rest of the world. In fact, it’s where wingfoiling first gained popularity.
We caught up with ENSIS MAUI’s Rudy Becker to talk about the conditions, the best gear, and what to expect when wingfoiling or downwind foiling in Maui. If you’ve ever dreamed of riding there, you’ll want to check this out.

Q&A with Rudy
Where in Maui are you based? What are the conditions like, and which seasons are best for wind sports?
I’m based on the beautiful island of Maui, mainly riding at Kā‘a Point. It’s known for its consistent wind, glassy waves, and stunning scenery. The best wind seasons are typically from April to September, with steady trade winds making it perfect for wingfoiling and parawinging. But Maui offers year-round conditions, so there’s always something to ride, no matter the season.
Maui is famous for its epic downwind conditions. How do you decide whether to go for a downwinder, a parawing downwinder, or just a wingfoil session?
Maui’s downwind conditions are legendary! My choice depends on the wind direction and swell size. If the wind is strong and consistent, a wingfoil session at Kā‘a is hard to beat. For long glides and open-ocean runs, the downwinders from Maliko to Kahului Harbor are a must. Parawing downwinders are especially fun when the swell lines up nicely – it feels like surfing endless waves.
What’s the wind strength like, and what’s your most-used wing size?
Wind strength here typically ranges from 15 to 30 knots, depending on the season and location. My go-to wing sizes are the ENSIS ROGER 3m or 4m SCORE LE – they offer a great balance of power and control for Maui’s conditions.

Have you been enjoying the ROGER? How quickly did you learn parawinging, and what advice would you give to someone just starting?
I’ve been loving the ENSIS ROGER! It’s quick to set up, super smooth, and offers excellent control. Learning parawinging was intuitive – after just a few sessions, I felt comfortable with the handling.
For beginners, board selection is crucial. Start with a larger board that floats you comfortably so you can focus on handling the wing. As you progress, you can downsize to a smaller board for more maneuverability. Also, pick the right conditions – having enough wind makes learning much easier. Light wind can be frustrating when you’re starting out.
Are you a boom or handles guy? Which is your favorite wing?
I’m a handles guy – I like the direct feel and control they offer. My go-to wing is the new ENSIS SCORE Limited Edition , especially in lighter wind conditions where I need that extra bit of power.
What should someone know before doing a downwinder in Maui?
Before heading out on a downwinder in Maui, always check the forecast, as wind and swell conditions can change quickly. Plan your route in advance and know where you’ll come in. Wearing a leash and carrying safety gear is essential, and it’s always a good idea to go with a buddy – it’s safer and more fun. Start with shorter distances and gradually build up as you gain confidence.
