MANIAC FOIL Development Series – about ACE foils

We’re beyond stoked about the launch of the new ENSIS MANIAC FOIL range. From day one, our goal was clear: to create the best foil for each discipline—not just in terms of performance, but in overall riding experience. This no-compromise approach led us to introduce the ACE concept. In this article, we’ll dive into what ACE means for the MANIAC FOIL range.

What is the ACE Concept?

ACE stands for Advanced Component Engineering. It’s our label for identifying the products that lead their category. Products carrying the ACE badge are designed with no compromises – every aspect, from construction to performance, is pushed to the highest standard. In our foil range, that means components that are hydrodynamic, strong, lightweight, and built with extremely rigid connections.

MANIAC Foils with the ACE Label

The MANIAC FOIL range launched with three ACE-labelled products: two front wings – the INFINITY ACE and STRIDE ACE – and one mast under the MANIAC ACE name.

The ACE front wings feature a carbon monobloc construction, meaning the front wing and fuselage are one solid piece. This design offers major hydrodynamic benefits, reduces the number of screws, and allows for a much stiffer connection with minimal play. The result is a noticeably more responsive foil.

We won’t go too deep into the specific front wing designs today, but what’s important to know is that they’re built to excel in their respective disciplines – and the ACE construction lets us take their performance to the next level.

When it came to materials, we didn’t hold back. For the ACE monobloc setup, we selected the most suitable high modulus carbon to strike the right balance between rigidity and durability. The entire system is incredibly light, which is especially noticeable as the front wing is positioned at the furthest point from the mast. Whether you’re jumping, carving, or pumping, ACE foils deliver the best-in-category feel.

As for the MANIAC ACE mast, we used an ultra-high modulus carbon fiber to achieve maximum stiffness in both flex and torsion. This allowed us to go slimmer and more hydrodynamic, making the mast fast and efficient through the water.

Designer comments

Jan Pütz was the head designer and engineer behind the MANIAC FOIL range. He brought the vision for the ENSIS MANIAC system to life and is known for his obsessive attention to detail – from water flow to the smallest tolerances. We asked him about the development of the ACE front foils.

When asked about the reasoning and advantages behind the monobloc construction, he started by saying, “The best interface is no interface.” Reducing the number of screws was always a goal. He explained that by using a monobloc design, you can create a much slimmer fuselage, since the front wing is built in and there’s no need to accommodate screws or threads. This also gives room to reinforce the front wing based on its specific use case and design.

We also spoke about the challenges of designing the monobloc. Tolerances were a major focus – Jan mentioned countless prototypes and the importance of considering even the smallest angles in the connection. To keep things practical, he decided on a two-piece system so the foil remains easy to store, fit in a car, or ship, while still being quick and simple to set up. Ensuring perfect alignment and a precise fit was key.

Michi worked closely with Jan on the project as a lead tester and project manager. When we asked Jan if Michi was difficult to work with, he laughed and assured us he wasn’t. He said he really enjoyed developing new things with Michi and appreciates his positive nature and precise feedback.
