Wing Foil Racing at the Langebaan Cup and Downwind Dash: a long-running windsurfing and wingfoiling race that takes place annually in South Africa. Langebaan is one of the windiest locations in the Western Cape, providing the perfect conditions for high-speed competition.

This event has become a highlight of the watersports calendar, attracting South Africa windsurfers and wingfoilers to race in the stunning setting of Langebaan Lagoon. The event week is filled with both exciting competition and a great social atmosphere, concluding with the Downwind Dash - a massive slalom race across the entire lagoon where all disciplines compete against each other to be the first to cross the finish line. This year, Joshua and Tobias represented ENSIS on the water.

Wing Foil Racing Langebaan Cup 2025

About Langebaan

Langebaan is one of the most unique watersports destinations in South Africa. It is home to a massive marine lagoon, entirely filled with ocean water - unlike most lagoons in the country, which are estuaries with freshwater. This gives the lagoon its signature bright blue, crystal-clear water.

Surrounded by mountains, headlands, and a protected national park, the location is breathtaking, with stunning backdrops and wildflowers. Most importantly, Langebaan is incredibly windy. It benefits from the famous Cape Doctor south-easterly wind as well as thermal winds on hot, windless days, making it one of the most consistently windy spots in the Western Cape. Summer conditions mean that foiling is almost guaranteed every day. However, while the lagoon appears to be a flatwater paradise, it presents unexpected challenges. As the tides shift, currents can run faster than expected, adding an extra layer of difficulty to racing.

The Wing Foil Racing

Joshua and Tobias represented ENSIS in the competition, taking on two different race courses - a figure-eight slalom and an upwind triangle. The placement of the marks made for an exciting challenge, as competitors had to navigate through wind shadows, shifting currents, and strong gusts. Over the three-day event, 13 races were held, with Joshua securing second place overall and Tobias finishing 10th. With around 30 wingfoilers in each race, the start line was packed, making for fun and interesting competition.

The Downwind Dash

The Downwind Dash is one of the most exciting parts of the event. Seven buoys mark the course across the lagoon from Main Beach to Mykonos (a town north apart of Langanbaan), spanning approximately 20 km. All wind-powered disciplines - windsurfing, kiting, and wingfoiling -compete in a high-speed drag race to the finish. With around 100 competitors on the start line, the race begins with a rabbit start, where a boat sets the pace, and riders can cross the line as soon as it passes them.

This year, wingfoilers dominated the event, thanks in part to a pack of windsurfers missing a mark. The podium was filled entirely by wingfoilers, with Joshua finishing second overall.

Don’t Miss the Next One

If you’re in South Africa around the time of the event, it is definitely worth attending. Whether you're racing or simply enjoying the spectacle, the Langebaan Cup and Downwind Dash offer an unforgettable experience in one of the best wind conditions in the world. See you on the start line next year!
