Steve Tobis Joins ENSIS

We’re super excited to welcome Steve Tobis to the ENSIS team! Steve is a waterman from Maui who loves being in the waves and wind, whether he’s wingfoiling, parawinging, or downwind foiling. ENSIS is stoked to have him on board. We caught up with him to learn more about his journey, what drives him, and why he’s stoked to ride with ENSIS.

Getting to Know Steve
Can you introduce yourself?
My name is Steve Tobis, and I live in Maui, I first got into foiling around 2017 while living in Southern California, where I mostly surfed and kiteboarded. This was when the first production foils were coming to market, and after realizing I could foil in super light wind, I was hooked.
You do wingfoiling, parawinging, and downwind foiling—do you have a favorite?
It really depends on the conditions. In summer, the north shore of Maui goes flat, and the strong, consistent trade winds create ideal conditions for downwind foiling. As we transition into winter and north swells arrive, I shift more into wave disciplines like surfing, parawinging, and wingfoiling.
What’s your ideal session?
I love big waves and fast, long downwinders. When there’s a high surf warning, I get excited to break out the jet ski and small tow foils. During summer, the strong winds build huge open-ocean rollers, making for exciting downwind runs. Any session where I can push my limits—both in equipment and personal skill—is my favorite.

What drew you to ENSIS, and what’s your favorite piece of gear?
ENSIS produces high-quality, high-performance gear. Everything I’ve tried just clicked instantly—I didn’t have to adapt; it all just worked. My current favorites are the ROGER and SCORE Limited Edition wings.
What are you currently working on improving in your riding?
Right now, I’m focused on improving my downwind performance. My goal is to push my split times while gaining efficiency, speed, and consistency, alongside maintaining peak physical fitness.
Do you have any big goals or projects coming up?
I’m racing in the 2025 Triple Crown, so my focus is on the summer downwind races. It’s always exciting to have riders from around the world gather in Hawaii to compete.
When you’re not foiling, what else do you do?
I spend a lot of time working on my physical fitness, training, and enjoying life with my family.
What’s the best post-session meal on Maui?
Ahi poke is my go-to!
Any advice for someone looking to start wingfoiling or downwind foiling?
Just jump in and start. Enjoy the learning process, embrace the difficulty, and set realistic expectations. Take it step by step and stick with it. These sports are tough to learn, but if you push through, they’ll provide a lifetime of fun.

Welcome to the team
It’s clear that Steve is happiest when he’s out on the water, chasing waves and wind. His positive energy, dedication, and passion for the sport make him a perfect fit for the ENSIS team. We’re stoked to have a rider like Steve, who not only pushes his own limits but also shares the same friendly, welcoming vibe that defines ENSIS.
